Hugo Broos is getting all the credit for the improvement of Bafana Bafana at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast and former defender Japie Motale has explained why he rates the coach highly.

Following his appointment as Bafana head coach in 2021, the Belgian sent a bold message to fans that they should “kill him” if he failed to qualify the team for AFCON.

With the 2017 AFCON winner on the verge of qualifying Bafana for the next round of the competition, he has been lauded for his bravery in making tough decisions.

Bafana beat Namibia 4-0 on Sunday night to increase their chances of progressing in the competition, with their last group match against Tunisia tomorrow next on their schedule.

“As South Africans, I sometimes feel like we don’t know what we want. There was a time when we had a large pool of players plying their trade overseas, and in those days there were some supporters that were complaining that locally based players were not getting enough chance to play in the national team. People were counting how many locally based players were making the cut for Bafana and were complaining. Now God has answered the prayers of many of those people and we are seeing several locally based players in the team but there are complaints again,” said Motale, speaking exclusively to the Siya crew.

“But what I like is that we have a coach who is very brave. He is one of the bravest coaches we have had in recent times who knew what he wanted to achieve when he came here and stood his ground. He doesn’t care who tells him what, and all that he is focused on is doing his thing and what he thinks will work for him with the players he has got,” concluded Motale.
