They ended up winning 3-1 in the penalty shootout, after the scores were locked on 0-0 after extra time.

Former Pirates defender and 1995 CAF Champions League winning captain Edward “Magents” Motale stated that Bucs planned very well against a stubborn Sundowns side.
Talking to Soccer Laduma in an exclusive interview after the final, Motale stated that starting with two strikers in Kermit Erasmus and Zakhele Lepasa put pressure on Sundowns’ defence so much so that they were not as mobile as they were in other games.
Magents added that it is now up to the players to bring back that confidence and continue winning in other competitions.
“I think their planning made the difference. Pirates planned very well against Sundowns. You saw they started with two strikers and that disturbed Sundowns’ defence,” Motale told Soccer Laduma.
“They didn’t move as much as they do in other games. I can’t say that they won’t lose again because this is football. But it’s up to the players now to maintain that confidence and keep on winning.
“Sundowns won 10 games in a row and Pirates can also do that or even more but as I have said it is up to the players now. You know the coach does what he can do at training and when it’s time to play it’s the players who should take over and do the job.
“But honestly, I think winning the MTN8 is the start of the new chapter and if the players want it they can do even better than just winning the first trophy of the season,” Motale concluded to the Siya crew.
