Chiefs had moved Johnson from his recent position of Head of the Academy to interim head coach after the sacking of Molefi Ntseki.
Since then many high ranking coaches such as Pitso Mosimane have been linked with the head coach position at Amakhosi, but after a few games in charge, former Chiefs captain and coach Mabedi discusses why Johnson is the right candidate to take over the reigns permanently.
The current Malawi national team coach, Mabedi stated that the former Platinum Stars coach has what it takes to revive Chiefs’ fortunes.
“Johnson is the right coach. He is the right person for the job. The team should not look any further and disturb what he is building. You see he believes is the mixture of youth and experience which you can see is already working for the team,” Mabedi told the Siya crew.
“That’s number one. Secondly he is a local coach and he understands the Kaizer Chiefs way of doing things and understands the players as well. He knows the league very well as he has been there for a long time. Lastly look at the combinations he has come up with in the team and those combinations are helping the team win games.
“They have kept two clean sheets already in two games. When last did that happen at Chiefs? We have to be honest he deserves to be the head coach and to bring back the glory days to the Amakhosi faithful. I personally think he has raised his hand for the job right now,” Mabedi observed.
Meanwhile Mabedi added that the combination of Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Yusuf Maart is best for defensive midfield and that the team has been doing well with them there. He also adds his advice on how the other midfielders can fit into the system.
“As for defensively (in midfield) that’s the best combination (Maart with Mthethwa) and they can use Edson (Castillo) as an offensive player. He likes to be in the opposition box and has an eye for goal. So for development they can work with the young Samkelo Zwane as cover incase of injuries or suspensions. If they have that then the future of the team is in safe hands. But for now, there is light at the end of the tunnel,” Mabedi told Soccer Laduma.
