Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Dr Irvin Khoza has announced that the league will implement a new Bundesliga-inspired way to honour title-winning teams.
The Brazilians bulldozed to a sixth consecutive Premiership title almost unopposed with a 16-point gap at the summit of the log table, while Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United finished second and third.

Speaking at the 22/23 PSL awards ceremony on Sunday night, Khoza announced that the league will now grant a commemorative ‘star’ to a team that wins the league three times.
“We have decided to come up with an award in recognition which is benched-marked along the lines of the Bundesliga – that any team winning three titles is going to be entitled to one star, a five-pointed star,” Khoza explained.
“Six titles upwards [will result in] two stars, but now it is three stars for ten trophies (titles) and 20 trophies (titles) is four stars.
“So Mamelodi Sundowns is the first team in the new era to be recognised with that award of having won six titles in a row, well done Masandawana.”
The new rule will slightly differ from the ‘German stars rule’ where Borussia Dortmund and Mönchengladbach, for example, boast two stars on their shirt for the five titles won each while Bayern Munich boasts five stars above their crest for their 33 league titles.
“We are hoping the next season will be exciting, for other teams as motivation because it’s very important that we must have that, added Khoza.
“But more importantly we said as a league, let us recognise these teams since 1971 that have achieved the same feat.
“We also decided as the executive committee that we must have replica trophies for all the teams that have won the title since 1971 so that their trophy room can have something as motivation as part of their induction in their respective teams, or for tourism or sport. So that is coming, ladies and gentlemen.
Sundowns were the biggest winners at awards ceremony, with as many as six player scooping accolades including midfielder Teboho Mokoena who was voted as the Player of the Season while head coach Rulani Mokwena also walked away with the Coach of the Season award.
