Man United considering move for Serie A midfielder
Manchester United exited the Carabao Cup at the quarter-final stage on Thursday after a 4-3 defeat against Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The Red Devils fell behind early on when Dominic Solanke scored, and found themselves 3-0 down shortly after the break when the Englishman added his second and Spurs’ third after Dejan Kulusevski had made it 2-0.
Goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo then cut the deficit to just a single goal, before Tottenham captain Son Heung-Min scored directly from a corner to make it 4-2.
Despite an added-time goal from veteran defender Jonny Evans, the visitors were unable to find an equaliser in North London and the Lilywhites therefore progress into the last four of the competition, where they will face holders Liverpool.
United head coach Ruben Amorim has endured an inconsistent start to his tenure at Old Trafford, winning four and losing three of his eight matches in charge of the club so far.
With that in mind, those in charge of the club’s recruitment could look to bolster his squad next year, and a Serie A midfielder is reportedly among their top targets.
As per Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, the Manchester club are seriously considering a move for Atalanta’s Ederson as they search for a new central midfielder.
He claims that several of United’s decision makers are convinced about the Brazil international’s ability, but there is not yet complete consensus on whether he is the ideal target to pursue.
Ederson, 25, has played more than 100 times for Atalanta – scoring ten times – since joining from fellow Italian side Salernitana in 2022.
The Brazilian is contracted to his current side until 2027, and Plettenberg claims that he is valued at around £40-50 million.
It is also claimed that the Premier League side have scouted the player on a number of occasions and have gathered all relevant information ahead of a potential move to sign him next year.
