Man City vs West Ham live score, updates, highlights, result from Premier League as Haaland goes for goal record

Manchester City look to keep pace with Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table as the Citizens host West Ham at the Etihad on Wednesday.

The Gunners retook the top spot in the standings with yesterday’s win over Chelsea, and look up for the fight once again. Yet City have two games in hand and can cash in on one here with victory over West Ham.

Pep Guardiola will once again be without Kevin de Bruyne pulling the strings, as he looks to keep the Belgian fit for a return in Champions League play next week.

West Ham sit four points above the relegation zone, and while they appear safe for the moment with three teams below them all level on points and truly in the scrap, a slip down the table will make for a nervy finish to the campaign.

Man City vs West Ham live updates, highlights, commentary

71st min.: Haaland goal! There’s the record! It’s a delightful chip of the goalkeeper on an incisive through ball from Jack Grealish. Amazing feat: 35 goals, surpassing the single-season record by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer.

68th min.: SUB West Ham. Danny Ings is on for Michail Antonio as West Ham try to get back into this. The Hammers have enjoyed some long spells of possession lately, but the atmosphere is a quiet one at the Etihad. It feels like nerves.

58th min.: Penalty for City? West Ham’s Thilo Kehrer with the slide tackle on Erling Haaland in the box, and it looks like Kehrer gets more man than ball on that sliding challenge. But the referee (and subsequently the VAR) sees nothing wrong with it.

50th min.: Goal Man City! It’s a Nathan Ake header on an exquisite Riyad Mahrez set-piece in the box. A scything sliding foul by Flynn Downes on Jack Grealish led to the opportunity, with Downes earning a yellow card for his troubles.

46th min. Second half is underway. But the Etihad is doing no favours for City. The City supporters are still eerily quiet. Nervous?

Halftime: Man City 0-0 West Ham

Halftime: The Etihad is quiet as West Ham have neutralised City and not allowed them to build a head of steam in this match. It’s been the odd attack here and there, but either goalkeeper Lucasz Fabianski or the woodwork that have served to defuse each attack.

Erling Haaland doesn’t look like scoring so far, as Kevin De Bruyne watches on from the bench area in street clothes.

#ManCity 0-0 West Ham, First-Half Stats:

Possession: 80% – 20%
Total Shots: 8 – 3
Shots On Target: 2 – 1
Big Chances Missed: 3 – 1
Corners: 4 – 0
Accurate Passes: 374 (91%) – 70 (68%)

— City Xtra (@City_Xtra) May 3, 2023

44th min.: Penalty City? Erling Haaland goes down at the top of the box as Flynn Downes had his hands on him, but no whistle from the referee.

32nd min.: Man City hit the post! Rodri strikes the ball while falling and it bounces off the right post and incredibly dances along the goal line. Man City go close again.

Watch in UK:

30th min.: Man City chance! This time Jack Grealish goes for it himself and hits the outside of the post.

24th min.: Erling Haaland chance! It’s a rare chance for Erling Haaland, who makes a far post run on a cross from Jack Grealish. But he can’t get the ball on frame. It’s been slim pickings for Man City so far.

— CentreGoals. (@centregoals) May 3, 2023

9th min.: Chance Man City! It’s Riyad Mahrez with a first-time shot from the top of the box, but Lucasz Fabianski stretches to make the low stop. It’s been a patient start from the defending champs.

1st min.: We’re off. Both teams in their primary kits.

5 mins to kickoff: Players are out of the tunnel. Kickoff is imminent.

30 mins to kickoff: It turns out that the three key West Ham absences — Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek and Nayef Aguerd — are out due to illness.

50 mins to kickoff: Here’s Pep Guardiola explaining why no Ederson for Man City tonight:

Pep Guardiola: “To rest a little bit. So [we have/had] a lot of games. For the mentality, to take a rest is good. We have a lot of confidence with Stefan [Ortega], and try for everyone to be involved.” [via @SkySportsPL] https://t.co/iRPNmVCrCx

60 mins to kickoff: Lineups are out. Arsenal supporters are going to be plenty upset when they see no Declan Rice or Tomas Soucek in the West Ham starting XI. There are also only 7 players on the Hammers’ bench when 9 are permitted.

120 mins to kickoff: Man City are surely fully focused on finishing this season strong, still in the hunt for silverware in three different competitions. Yet clubs always have one eye on the future, and their pursuit of Jude Bellingham took a major hit today with reports that he is close to personal terms with Real Madrid.

There are conflicting reports about how that affects Man City’s pursuit of the young England midfielder. Sport1 journalist Patrick Berger in Germany says that Liverpool and Man City are both now out of the race, while Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett says that the Real Madrid deal is far from done and Man City remain “very much in the hunt.”

Keine offizielle Anfrage. L’pool & City raus! ⚫️🟡

Man City vs West Ham lineups & team news

For Man City, health has been one of their biggest assets all season long in the Premier League title race. The only two injury issues are to Nathan Ake and Kevin De Bruyne, with the first returning to the starting lineup, while De Bruyne gets another day of rest.

De Bruyne missed the Fulham match and is out against West Ham, but it’s likely he returns by next week’s Champions League games. Ake, meanwhile, returned to training after a hamstring injury kept him sidelined for about a month.

Man City starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Ortega (GK) — Walker, Stones, Dias, Ake — Bernardo, Rodri — Mahrez, Alvarez, Grealish — Haaland.

Man City subs (9): Ederson, Laporte, Gomez, Akanji, Lewis, Phillips, Perrone, Gundogan, Foden

The Hammers are also quite healthy for this point in the season with Kurt Zouma and Gianluca Scamacca sidelined with injuries. But they have more key players out due to illness: Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek, and Nayef Aguerd are not in the squad.

West Ham starting lineup (4-4-2): Fabianski (GK) — Coufal, Kehrer, Ogbonna, Cresswell — Emerson, Downes, Paqueta, Fornals — Bowen, Antonio.

West Ham subs (7): Areola (GK), Anang, Johnson, Lanzini, Cornet, Ings, Benrahma

Man City vs West Ham betting odds & lines

Man City, as newly minted title favourites, have a huge advantage in this match, according to the oddsmakers. The injury to Kevin de Bruyne doesn’t seem to faze the betting market, with City still given odds of 1/5 to win.

There are also goals expected, given City’s attacking prowess and West Ham’s defensive struggles. The Hammers have three clean sheets over the last month, but they’ve also shipped five goals to Newcastle and four to Crystal Palace, plus conceding multiple goals to Liverpool and Arsenal.
