Eyeing 16th Championship Title, Magic Johnson Sends a Message to Washington Spirit Ahead of NWSL Final

All soccer fans’ eyes are set on Washington Spirit vs Orlando Pride, but Magic Johnson has a greater motive. For those unaware, the LA Lakers icon has so far won 15 championships throughout his career. Yep, that’s 1 college championship, 5 as a pro player, and 9 as a team owner. And now he has his eyes set on his 16th potential win.

The ex-NBA star did not keep his desire secret during the NWSL Championship pre-game chat. “I’ve already got 15 world championship rings. This will be the 16th… We just won the World Series with the Dodgers. And now to come here in NWSL and have a chance with the Washington spirit to win another championship is incredible. But also to grow the women’s game…” Johnson said.

Further, during the pre-game interview, Magic Johnson was asked about the advice he’d give to the Spirit players from his own experience of such big moments. “Just don’t forget what got you here, and that’s the key. Just play your game. You got here for a reason. Have fun. Enjoy the moment. But remember, don’t try to do too much. Just do what you’ve been doing all season long,” Johnson replied.

The 5x NBA champ further highlighted how each player playing their role to their best becomes crucial in championships. Well, who knows better than arguably the best point guard in NBA history? However, there’s an ex-NBA star guiding the other side as well. Yep, Orlando Pride part owner, Grant Hill.

It has been quite a journey for both teams. The Pride are chasing their first-ever NWSL title after a stellar season, topping the league table for the first time in seven years. That’s no small feat for a team that hasn’t finished higher than 7th since 2017.

On the other side, the Spirit’s story is one of resilience. They had a rocky start but found their rhythm when it mattered most. And call it a coincidence that it has hardly been two months since Johnson joined as one of the franchise owners.

Magic Johnson’s intent was clear with Washington Spirits: “We want to win championships”

When Johnson joined the team’s ownership group in September, fans knew something big was brewing. Announcing his involvement alongside Michele Kang on CBS Mornings, the basketball legend made it clear he’s here to make an impact.

“You know me, I love sports,” Johnson said with his signature enthusiasm. Already, part-owner of the Washington Commanders, he’s passionate about showing athletes what’s possible off the field. “It’s important that [the players] see minorities in an ownership position,” he explained, emphasizing his dedication to their growth, both on and off the pitch.

But, of course, winning is always top of mind for Magic. “We want to win championships. I got 14 world championships. I need 15 now…” he declared. Interestingly, his Dodgers helped him achieve that milestone shortly after, securing a World Series victory.

Meanwhile, Kang, the Spirit’s majority owner, couldn’t be more thrilled. Reflecting on how Johnson transformed the Lakers and NBA decades ago, she’s optimistic about what his influence can do for the Spirit. And the pre-game message he had for the players intends to do the same.
