Chelsea vs Liverpool live score, updates, lineups, and result from Premier League 2023/24

Chelsea and Liverpool will aim to provide more entertainment than they have done against each other during the past 18 months when they begin their 2023/24 Premier League seasons at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Each of the most recent four editions of the fixture have finished goalless as part of a six-game run of draws between the teams, with the Reds unbeaten at Chelsea in the league since May 2018.

It will be new Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino’s first competitive match in charge of the club. “Poch is a top manager, so they will show up,” Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp predicted. “It’s two really good, very talented football teams.”

Former Tottenham head coach Pochettino knows how he will be judged. “Only results will say if we are weaker or stronger than we were last season,” he said. “But I am happy. “

The Sporting News will be following the Chelsea vs. Liverpool match live, providing score updates, commentary, and highlights as they happen.

Chelsea vs Liverpool live updates, highlights, and commentary

11 mins: Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

An end-to-end passage of play almost ends in Mohamed Salah continuing his formidable record on opening day!

Enzo Fernandez attempts a shot in a dangerous area for Chelsea, but Ibrahima Konate thwarts the World Cup winner with a sliding tackle.

Cody Gakpo locates Salah after Liverpool break, and his glorious curled strike comes off the crossbar!

8 mins: Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

More defending to do for Chelsea: this time Axel Disasi, making his debut, intercepts a cross with a deft header to stop the delivery from reaching Luis Diaz.

Carney Chukwuemeka’s yellow card, after three minutes and 34 seconds, was the earliest by a Chelsea player on the first day of a Premier League season since Marcos Alonso in 2017-18, who went into the book more than a minute earlier against Burnley.

5 mins: Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

A first driving run from new Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai ends, again, in Diogo Jota demonstrating that he hasn’t quite found his range yet today as the Portugal international slashes at a shot.

Liverpool have made the more encouraging start.

4 mins: Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

Diogo Jota wins the ball in a promising position and has the chance to send Cody Gakpo away but waits too long to deliver the pass.

3 mins: Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

Diogo Jota has the first effort of the game, sending a header wide for Liverpool after good work by Cody Gakpo.

Then Chelsea’s Carney Chukwuemeka is cautioned for a late challenge.

1 mins: Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

The managers shared a warm hug before kickoff. These managers met in the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League final, when Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool beat Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham.

5 mins to kickoff: The teams are on the turf!

“It’s nice to be back,” Chelsea overlord Mauricio Pochettino told Sky Sports a few moments ago. “I am so excited, but at the same time we are so focused. It’s going to be a nice watch.”

Asked what he wanted from his team today, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said he expects compactness and being defensive and attacking at the right moments.

“We want to create, we want to be difficult to play against,” he added. “My wishlist is pretty long – let’s see what we get.”

25 mins to kickoff: Mohamed Salah has scored in Liverpool’s opening Premier League game in all six of his seasons with the Reds. His eight total goals on day one is a joint record in the competition.

45 mins to kickoff: Midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister make their debuts for Liverpool. Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah should help them avoid a fifth straight 0-0 draw in this fixture.

(4-3-3): Alisson (GK) – Robertson, Konate, van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold – Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Gakpo – Salah, Diaz, Jota

50 mins to kickoff: Team news! Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, defender Axel Disasi and forward Nicolas Jackson make their debuts for Chelsea. It’s probably a 3-5-2, now that their formations aren’t as tricky to assess as they were under former head coach Graham Potter.

(3-5-2): Sanchez (GK) – Colwill, Thiago Silva, Disasi – Chilwell, Chukwuemeka, Fernandez, Gallagher, James – Jackson, Sterling

1 hour to kickoff: Here’s how Chelsea checked in! Apart from last season’s relegated teams, they’ve collected the fewest wins (4) and points (20) of any Premier League side so far in 2023.

1 hour 20 mins to kickoff: Having mentioned Mauricio Pochettino’s strong record on opening day, managers generally have struggled when their first Premier League game in charge of a club has come against Liverpool.

Of the last 10, six have lost and four have drawn. Craig Shakespeare was the last to triumph, overseeing Leicester City’s 3-1 victory over the Reds in February 2017.

1 hour 40 mins to kickoff: Some good omens for both sides…

New Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino has won five of his previous seven first games of the season in the competition, the only defeat coming at Manchester United in 2015-16.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 11 Premier League games – the longest current run without a defeat for any side in the competition, encompassing seven wins.

The run started with a 0-0 draw at Chelsea, which is the only time they’ve failed to score during the sequence.

2 hours to kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ coverage of Chelsea and Liverpool’s meeting on the first Sunday of the 2023/24 Premier League season!

These teams were two of the favourites behind Manchester City to challenge for the title last time out, but the Blues employed three managers on their way to finishing 12th, while their opponents today had to settle for UEFA Europa League qualification.

Can the two members of the established ‘big six’ crack the top four again this time around? We’ll have team news and live updates throughout the afternoon.

Klopp was looking to rebuild his squad this summer with the additions of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai and the pair started the game.

An attack including Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah gave them ample cause to be optimistic of avoiding a fifth straight 0-0 draw in this fixture.
