Chelsea in pole position to sign Nigeria-eligible striker currently playing in the Paris Olympics
English Premier League giants Chelsea are close to signing Nigeria-eligible striker Samu Omorodion from Atletico Madrid, Soccernet.ng reports.
Omorodion broke onto the scene at Atletico Madrid last season after scoring on his senior team debut in a Laliga fixture against Granada. Following his performance in that game, some Spanish club indicated interest in acquiring his services because it was clear that he was not going to get much playing time at Atleti.
Subsequently, Omorodion sealed a season-long loan transfer to fellow Laliga side Alaves. There, he was quite decent, registering eight goals and one assist in 35 appearances.
Following Omorodion’s decent campaign with Alaves last season, he has been heavily linked with a transfer to English Premier League side Chelsea, who have implemented a transfer policy which has seen them sign a lot of young players in recent years.
The talks have been going on, and in a new development from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, both parties are close to reaching an agreement.
Atletico Madrid are set to accept Chelsea’s €35 million bid, and wait is let is the personal terms. Once everything is agreed upon, the Nigeria-eligible striker will become a Chelsea player.
The 20-year-old striker was born in Spain to Nigeria parents, and that enables him to play for Spain and Nigeria. However, he currently plays for Spain, albeit with the youth team. Still, he can switch to Nigeria because he has not been capped by Spain’s senior team.
