Champions League: Reyna, Dortmund advance; Ledezma, PSV suffer elimination
Gio Reyna and Borussia Dortmund advanced to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.
Reyna played the final five minutes of Dortmund’s 2-1 second leg victory over Lille on Wednesday. Niko Kovac’s squad advanced 3-2 on aggregate after the two teams played out a 1-1 draw at Signal Iduna Park last week.
Canadian national team forward Jonathan David opened the scoring after five minutes for Lille but Dortmund would rally in the second half to flip things in their favor.
Emre Can’s 54th minute penalty kick goal paired with Max Beier’s go-ahead goal 11 minutes later helped the Bundesliga visitors advance to the final eight.
Reyna replaced Beier in the 85th minute and proceeded to play the final five minutes plus stoppage time. The U.S. men’s national team attacker will soon be headed to international duty for the CONCACAF Nations League Final Four.
Borussia Dortmund will face off with Barcelona in the quarterfinals this April.
Richie Ledezma, PSV suffer elimination at Arsenal
Dutch giants PSV faced an uphill battle ahead of their trip to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday and unfortunately could not overturn a lofty aggregate scoreline.
Richie Ledezma started and played 90 minutes in PSV’s 2-2 second leg draw with Arsenal, but Peter Bosz’s squad suffered elimination 9-3 on aggregate. The right back continued his starting role for the squad.
PSV pegged the Gunners back twice on the night with Ivan Perisic and Couhaib Driouech scoring the goals.
USMNT defender Sergino Dest was an unused substitute in the match after making his return to action last weekend.
The reigning Eredivisie winners will now aim to turn things around domestically after falling to second place in recent weeks.
