Bayern Munich vs. Inter Milan live score: UEFA Champions League result, updates as Lautaro scores in quarterfinal first leg

Two under-the-radar Champions League contenders clash with a semifinal spot on the line as Inter travel to meet Bayern Munich for the first leg of their quarterfinal matchup.

With Barcelona lighting Europe on fire and the potential for a Clasico final hogging the spotlight, these two clubs will hope to make their own case for a trophy run.

Inter reached the final two years ago and have dominated Italian football over the last half-decade, thus considering themselves perennial contenders. Bayern, meanwhile, won their last European title in 2020 and reached the semifinals last season where they were just barely edged by Real Madrid.

However, both teams are dealing with significant injury blows which will hamper their chances at advancing. Bayern are without wonderkid Jamal Musiala who suffered a torn hamstring just this past weekend, and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is struggling for fitness as well. Inter, meanwhile, have a number of midfield cogs also on the fritz, leaving both sides to scramble for starters.

Bayern Munich vs. Inter Milan live updates, highlights from Champions League

74th min: Carlos Agusto has a head injury and needs treatment, and both sides will make changes during the stoppage. Inter withdraw Henrikh Mkhitaryan and bring on Davide Frattesi.

Bayern make a trio of changes, as Thomas Muller replaces Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry takes over for Raphael Guerreiro, and Sacha Boey replaces the booked Kim Min-Jae.

70th min: Henrikh Mkhitaryan hooks Harry Kane to the ground with a late tackle stopping a counter-attack, and he picks up a yellow card.

65th min: Chance, Bayern Munich! That’s more like it from Bayern! A poor clearance from Francesco Acerbi only ends up as far as Raphael Guerrero who rifles a volley off his chest that blazes just inches over the crossbar!

Inter appear to be losing steam, this could be a furious final twenty minutes!

63rd min: Konrad Laimer feeds Josip Stanisic for an awkward header. It’s just Bayern Munich’s second shot attempt of the last half-hour bracketing halftime, as they’ve been completely smothered.

55th min: Chance, Inter! A big save by Jonas Urbig keeps Lautaro Martinez from finding a brace! The 21-year-old is strong at his near post, as his outstretched arm prevents Martinez from profiting off a tight-angle shot down the right side.

Inter look the better side so far!

53rd min: Lautaro Martinez is slipped in vertically down the left edge of the six-yard box, but Leon Goretzka makes a sensational tackle to dispossess the Argentine and prevent a shot.

As Bayern look to break off the corner, Michael Olise is fouled by Lautaro who picks up Inter’s first yellow card of the match.

2nd half kickoff: They’re back under way for the second half, and there are no changes for either side. Simeone Inzaghi will be much happier with his side after the initial 45 minutes, while Vincent Kompany has a lot of questions to answer without Jamal Musiala to turn to.

How long until Bayern turn to Thomas Muller off the bench?

HALFTIME: Bayern Munich 0-1 Inter Milan

Inter log yet another 45 minutes of scoreless defensive football, and have profited on the other end as well. Lautaro Martinez looks to be in the best European form of his career, and now it’ll just be about protecting the lead for Simone Inzaghi.

Bayern have created a few chances of their own, but they don’t look as overwhelming as usual. Whether that has more to do with the lack of Jamal Musiala’s influence or the stifling defence of their opponents, it’s hard to tell.

43rd min: Inter have their tails up now since taking the lead, barreling forward on the ball and playing runners in behind. The flag goes up on a feed down the left which is where they generated the goal from.

38th min: GOAL INTER MILAN! LAUTARO MARTINEZ BLASTS INTER IN FRONT!

It’s a magnificent goal that begins with a run by Carlos Augusto down the left, with his cross played perfectly for an onside Marcus Thuram streaking down the middle. He makes a sublime touch backwards to Martinez who is trailing the play, and the Argentine ripples the net for the opening goal!

28th min: Kim Min-Jae picks up the game’s first booking as he catches Lautaro Martinez late.

24th min: Chance, Bayern Munich! HARRY KANE WITH A BIG MISS!!!! He finds himself in some space on a tight angle to the left, but as he opens his body to shoot, he rifles the ball across the face of goal and off the far post!!

14th min: Chance, Bayern Munich! The Germans have begun to really assert their dominance and are in firm control of the match. Harry Kane gets his head to a cross while falling away from goal, but it’s too central and easy for Yann Sommer to grab above his head.

7th min: Chance, Bayern Munich! The hosts have the first real opportunity on net as they work the ball around to Michael Olise on the right who rifles a vicious effort that deflects just inches wide of the far post! A true stinger that only just barely went wide!

Josh Kimmich wastes the ensuing corner as he puts it out of play over the top of the net.

5th min: Inter have held much of the early possession but haven’t worked much with it. Michael Olise runs a dangerous counter-attack and is tackled inside the top-right corner of the penalty area, but the referee waves play on.

Kickoff: They’re under way at Allianz Arena! Can Bayern Munich gain an early first-leg advantage at home, or will the stifling Inter defence keep them at bay?

Bayern Munich vs. Inter Milan: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

15 mins to kickoff: Thierry Henry has given his support to Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi who he believes is one of the most underrated coaches in Europe. Quite the bill of support!

30 mins to kickoff: The Inter back line has been exceptional all season long, especially in European play. They have kept an insane eight clean sheets amongst the 10 UCL matches played, conceding just two total goals — one to Bayer Leverkusen in the group stage and one to Feyenoord in the Round of 16.

As it stands, that 80% clean sheet rate is a Champions League record.

Inter Milan currently have the highest clean sheet percentage (80%) of any other team to have played 10+ matches in a single Champions League campaign…

Can they keep Bayern Munich at bay this evening? 👀

45 mins to kickoff: Inter have made some interesting lineup choices as well. While Federico Dimarco, Davide Frattesi, and Joao Palhinha sit on the bench, Carlos Augusto is installed at left-back and Nicolo Barella rejoins the midfield.

1 hour to kickoff: Well, lineups are in. Remember that whole thing we just wrote about how Muller could end his career in storybook fashion as the man who saved the club from Musiala’s injury? Well…he’s not in the starting lineup!

Instead, Vincent Kompany has gone with a formation change to make up the gap, moving to a 4-3-3 and eliminating the No. 10 position entirely. Josip Stanisic comes in at right-back, moving Konrad Laimer back to his natural midfield position alongside Leon Goretzka and Josh Kimmich. That means it will be up to Leroy Sane and Michael Olise to work the ball forward and play off Harry Kane to create chances.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: With lineups imminent, Thomas Muller is expected to take over for Jamal Musiala in the No. 10 role. It could be a storybook way for Muller to bow out as a Bayern Munich player, as it was announced just days ago that he will not re-sign with the club and will depart at the end of the season.

Muller has been a Bayern player his entire career, logging 743 senior appearances since his debut in 2009. It’s been an incredible career for Muller, and Champions League glory replacing his replacement would be quite the ending. There’s a long way to go in that regard, but boy would it be fascinating.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: This matchup is a rematch of the 2010 Champions League final, which saw Inter run away as treble winners with a 2-0 victory.

Bayern finally managed to exact revenge in their pair of group meetings in late 2022, with a pair of 2-0 wins of their own, but they have never managed to eliminate Inter from the knockout stage in three all-time matchups, including that famous final.

1 hour 45 mins to kick: Lautaro Martinez has become a legend at Inter, but the weakest part of his resume by far is his Champions League record. He has just 18 goals in 53 total UCL matches for the club, and nearly a third of those came in one season back in 2019/20 when the club failed to escape the group stage. He has just two career goals from the quarterfinals on, and both came in the 2022/23 season when Inter made the final.

If Lautaro wishes to become a true European all-time great, he will have to perform in the biggest moments, and this game counts as such.

2 hours to kickoff: The loss of Jamal Musiala is a devastating blow for Bayern Munich in their hunt for European glory. The 22-year-old playmaker went down with a torn hamstring in the 57th minute of their weekend league game, leaving him likely out for the rest of the season, unless they make the final.

It felt as if the German giants were flying under the radar as potential title contenders, but without their young superstar, it’s hard to see them challenging for the crown. They have a lot to prove now in his absence.

Jamal Musiala was fouled 10 times against Bayer Leverkusen, the most by a Bayern Munich player in a UEFA Champions League match on record.

The only way they could stop him. 😅 pic.twitter.com/q4zwYKaBBJ

Bayern Munich vs. Inter Milan lineups, team news

Injuries are starting to mount at an inconvenient time for Bayern boss Vincent Kompany, with Jamal Musiala‘s hamstring injury in Friday’s 3-1 win over Augsburg likely to end his campaign.

Top scorer Harry Kane was also seen with an ice-pack on his ankle but the problem is not thought to be serious. Thomas Muller was thought set to start in Musiala’s absence after announcing he will end his career-long spell with Bayern at the end of this season, but instead Kompany has eliminated the position entirely in a switch to a 4-3-3.

Kingsley Coman and veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer faced late fitness tests, and neither find themselves available, while Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano are long-term absentees with serious knee injuries suffered on international duty.

Bayern Munich starting lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Urbig (GK) — Stanisic, Kim, Dier, Guerreiro —Goretzka, Kimmich, Laimer — Olise, Kane, Sane.

Bayern Munich subs: Peretz (GK), Klanac, Boey, Vidovic, Kusi-Asare, Jensen, Palhinha, Karl, Gnabry, Muller.

Alessandro Bastoni being taken off as a precaution against Parma came back to bite Inter at the weekend as they let a 2-0 lead slip to draw 2-2. The Italy international returns to Simone Inzaghi’s formidable defence.

There are concerns in midfield as Kristjan Asllani serves a suspension and Piotr Zielinski sits out with a calf problem. Denzel Dumfries will also miss out, meaning the versatile Matteo Darmian will start at right wing-back, while Carlos Augusto is chosen at left-back over Federico Dimarco.

Mehdi Taremi is sidelined with a muscular complaint, but Inzaghi will happily bank on lethal front two Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram doing the business.

Inter Milan starting lineup (3-5-2, right to left): Sommer (GK) — Pavard, Acerbi, Bastoni — Darmian, Calhanoglu, Frattesi, Mkhitaryan, Augusto — Thuram, Martinez.

Inter Milan subs: J. Martinez (GK), Di Gennaro (GK), Cecconi, de Vrij, Bisseck, Frattesi, Dimarco, De Pieri, Zanchetta, Zalewski, Berenbruch, Arnautovic.
