Newcastle return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon following their exit from the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night at the quarter final, losing on penalties to Chelsea.
The defeat means Eddie Howe’s side have now lost four of their last five matches ahead of their trip to Luton on Saturday, a run which saw their first Champions League campaign in 20 years come to an abrupt end, and leaves them sixth in the Premier League table.
The Magpies start the weekend five points behind Manchester City in fourth place, and can close that gap to two this weekend due to the defending champions being out of action in the league because of their commitments in the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia this week.
The Tyneside club’s midweek defeat in West London also means they have now lost five of their last six matches away from home ahead of their trip to Kenilworth Road.
Luton head into the weekend occupying one of the relegation zone slots, and will be desperate for a victory against a Newcastle side who have struggled away from home in the league this season, to edge closer to Premier League safety.
Rob Edwards’ side are currently five points shy of Nottingham Forest in 17th place, but do have a game in hand following the abandonment of last week’s game with Bournemouth, so a win would leave them within striking distance of the East Midlands side.
The Hatters have lost four of their last five games, but three of them have come against Arsenal and both Manchester sides, but will need to improve on their current record of one win in their last 10 matches if they wish to stay in the Premier League for another year.
Four of Luton’s last five home games have come against ‘Big 6’ teams, during which they conceded last minute goals against each of Liverpool and Arsenal to drop points and also led Manchester City at one point the belief will be there to beat Newcastle on Saturday.
The two teams have only met once in any competition since 1994, in which Newcastle won 3-1 in the FA Cup in 2018, but the Magpies haven’t won an away game against Luton since 1981, nine meetings ago, and are scoreless in their last six.
