Reports: Rapids hold talks with Jack Wilshere over head coaching job

Jack Wilshere never played a minute in Major League Soccer, but is linked with a potential move to the league in a different role.

The Colorado Rapids have reportedly engaged in talks with Wilshere over their open head coaching vacancy, ESPN and The Athletic reported Thursday. The Rapids are owned by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, who also own English Premier League giants Arsenal, Wilshere’s former club as a player.

Wilshere came through the ranks at Arsenal during his playing days before making 197 combined appearances for the Gunners in 10 years. He also spent time with West Ham United, Bournemouth (on two separate loans), Bolton Wanderers (loan), and AGF Aarhus.

The Stevenage-born Wilshere earned 34 caps for the English national team.

The 31-year-old is currently head coach of Arsenal’s Under-18 side and has led them to the FA Youth Cup Final in his first season in charge.

Colorado is currently in last place in the Western Conference and parted ways with former head coach Robin Fraser in September. Chris Little was promoted to interim head coach following Fraser’s departure, but isn’t expected to be a candidate for the position long-term.

The Rapids will travel to FC Dallas on Oct. 14 before closing out their regular season schedule on Decision Day against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 21.
