Canada Soccer announces 23-player Gold Cup roster
The Canadian men’s national team named the 23-player roster for the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup, with Richie Laryea and Lucas Cavallini headlining the squad.
Head coach John Herdman opted for a Major League Soccer-heavy team for the upcoming tournament, rotating players as Alphonso Davies, Cyle Larin and Jonathan David return to their individual clubs. But despite a change of guard, Herdman insists Canada is serious about winning all upcoming tournaments.
“We’ve got to get real and quick because these players, they deserve it,” Herdman declared after the 0-2 loss to the USMNT in the Nations League final. “They deserve a shot. The country deserves it. All the people that worked to bring it deserve the shot. Let’s get after it. We’re close.”
Les Rouges have not won a major trophy since 2000, despite boasting several top international talents. Though Herdman intends to change that during CONCACAF competitions, Canada will have to overcome giants United States and Mexico in the later rounds of the Gold Cup.
For now, CanMNT will kick off the tournament on June 27 against Guatemala, Cuba and a third, undetermined opponent in Group D.
