‘Everything has gone to s***’ – Football fans baffled over Match of the Day coverage with no theme tune, pundits or commentators in 20-minute highlights show

Match of the Day viewers have been left baffled over BBC’s 20-minute coverage of the Premier League round-up show on Saturday night.

BBC chose to run the programme with no presenter or studio pundits following their decision in Gary Lineker taking a ‘step back’.

The 62-year-old was axed from presenting Match of the Day this weekend after he criticised the UK government over their new asylum policy.

A host of BBC pundits and colleagues of Lineker then decided they wouldn’t appear as a sign of solidarity – with MOTD’s in-house commentators also joining in on the boycott.

It led to BBC chiefs to decide to just run a short highlights show of the six games that took place on Saturday.

Though talkSPORT did offer to step in and save the day after serving up Alan Brazil to assume the presenting role.

To the surprise of the Match of the Day viewers, the famous theme tune prior to the show starting was also scrapped, with those watching given no indication the programme had started.

And unsurprisingly, fans were left wanting more as the soul of the show was ripped out following their drastic decisions.

A third added: “They haven’t even done the theme tune! Everything has gone to s*** here.”

This user quipped: “Even the Match of the Day theme tune boycotted the show in solidarity with Gary Lineker.”

Meanwhile one stated: “MOTD strange. No titles. No theme tune. No commentary. Feels completely flat. Definitely an own goal by BBC.”

And comedian Omid Djalili tweeted: “Watching MOTD with no presenter or pundits. Appalling. Even YouTube clips have commentary.

“Sending my new publicity shot to the BBC immediately as emergency replacement for Gary Lineker next week.”

Summing up the viewer’s experience, one fan said: “Congratulations BBC. The worst production of a program ever in the history of British television. Incredible achievement.”

There were some users that enjoyed the mini rundown of the action, though TalkTV host Piers Morgan declared it as ‘s***’.

He said: “BBC should now adjust the licence fee so that everyone on Twitter pretending to prefer Match of the Day in the new format can pay £1 less a month.

“But only ever watch it that way in future. Spoiler alert: nobody would take that deal. It’s s***.”
