Man United looking to appoint Champions League manager
Manchester United are on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Erik ten Hag on Monday morning.
The Red Devils dismissed the Dutchman less than 24 hours after falling to a 2-1 defeat against West Ham United in the Premier League.
United had endured their worst ever start to a Premier League season under Ten Hag, with their start even worse than the previously record-breaking last campaign.
They have won just four of 14 matches across all competitions so far, and sit 14th in the Premier League table after nine games.
Former United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy has been placed in interim charge of the club, but it now appears that the Manchester outfit are chasing a Champions League manager as Ten Hag’s successor.
As per The Athletic, United are working on a deal to appoint Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim as their new head coach.
The Portuguese has enjoyed huge success since taking charge of Sporting in 2020, and he has previously been linked with Premier League clubs including Chelsea and Liverpool.
It is also claimed that the 39-year-old would be open to succeeding Ten Hag, following his sacking on Monday.
Amorim has won 161 and lost 33 of his 227 matches in charge of the Portuguese top flight side, guiding them to five trophies including two league titles.
He has previously managed fellow Portuguese sides Casa Pia and Braga, the latter of which he was in charge of for just 13 matches after previously managing the club’s ‘B’ team.
Amorim’s current contract with Sporting is said to run until the end of the 2025/26 season, suggesting that United will have to pay compensation if they are to prise the Portuguese away from his current role.
