Former Super Eagles captain sends message to Luka Modric after penning new deal with Real Madrid
Former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi has congratulated Croatian midfielder Luka Modric on signing a one-year contract extension with Real Madrid, Soccernet.ng reports.
Modric has been one of the best players for Real Madrid since he joined the club from English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in 2012. The 38-year-old midfielder has played a big part in the club’s success in the past 12 years.
However, in recent years, he has started to take the backseat at Real Madrid to younger players because of his age. For most players above 30, Los Blancos always exercise some level of caution when extending the contracts of players above 30 years of age.
Real Madrid have also done this with Modric, who is already past his prime. His contract at the club was supposed to expire this summer.
However, the club handed him a one-year extension that will keep him in Madrid until the end of next season.
Following this development, former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi shared a picture of himself with the Real Madrid star on July 17 to congratulate him on extending his contract.
Mikel played at Chelsea for most of his career, and he faced Modric when the latter was at Tottenham. Modric is just a year older than Mikel, but the Super Eagles star retired from football three years ago.
By the time Modric’s current contract ends, he will be 39, and it is likely that he will retire afterwards.
